Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is often suggested for athletes or those with post-exercise muscle/joint pain, potentially easing discomfort via its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties—though supporting evidence is not definitive.
Some studies show that taking 3 grams of MSM daily, starting up to 3 weeks before intense exercise and continuing for days after, may reduce muscle soreness and fatigue. Additionally, MSM users had lower post-exercise oxidative stress markers (e.g., oxidized glutathione, malondialdehyde) and inflammatory markers (e.g., interleukin-1, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha).
Yet current evidence remains inconclusive, and larger clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects. Given MSM’s general safety profile, people with severe post-exercise muscle pain or those in intense events (e.g., marathons) may consider it to alleviate discomfort, experts note.
