Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) has gained attention for its ability to relieve chronic pain and prevent chemotherapy-related tissue damage, known as extravasation.
Topical application of DMSO can prevent extravasation—a condition where drugs like doxorubicin and vincristine leak from veins, causing pain, swelling, or tissue necrosis. Studies indicate that applying 77% DMSO cream every 3-8 hours during chemotherapy (for 10-14 days) reduces this risk. Additionally, it eases pain caused by conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome; research shows that using 50% concentration topical DMSO up to five times a day yields promising results.
While animal experiments and human studies have confirmed its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, experts note that more research is needed to fully validate its role in preventing chemotherapy side effects. DMSO’s dual potential in pain management and treatment safety makes it a compound of interest to healthcare practitioners.
